Şanizade Ataullah ve Divanı

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to provide information about the life and literary personality of Şanizade Mehmed Ataullah. We will establish the text of his only known literary work, his Turkish Divan, dwell on its form, content and style. Sanizade Mehmed Ataullah was born at the end of the 18th century, and died at the beginning of the 19th century. He was a well-known scholar of the period, known for his works on medicine, mathematics, history, astronomy and geography. Şanizade Mehmed Ataullah, son of Muderris Sadik Effendi, the judge of Madina, was from Istanbul. He worked as a professor, judge and histographer, respectively. As a result of the annihilation of Janissaries, he was exiled to Tire because of his probable tendency towards Bektashi order and he died there in a short time. Şanizade knew eastern and western languages well. He appreciated music and painting. He had sixteen works, translations and publications in the fields mentioned above. In this thesis, besides his Divan, brief information on these sixteen works is provided. The Divan of Şanizade is analyzed in terms of characteristics of its form, content and style. Regarding the form of the divan, we will evaluate statistical data about its versification, meter, rhyme and redif The characteristics of the content are examined in two different sections: religious elements, and historical, mythological elements. In the section on religous elements, the terminology of the Divan related to Allah is presented. The verses or hadiths mentioned or given in direct quotations are presented with their referances and translations. And finally, prophets that are mentioned in his Divan are discussed. In the second section, the historical, mythological events and characters mentioned in the Divan are analyzed in terms of in which verses and how they are handled. In the section of style, the characteristics of its language, proverbs, idioms and its various figures of speech are studied. Furthermore, sample verses for each of these elements are given. Finally, in the conclusion part, information reached through the analysis of Divan are evaluated. After describing the copies and the methods for establishing of the text, the text of Ata's Divan is given. At the end of the thesis, an index of the analysis as well as the indeks for proper nouns of the of Divan of Ata are appended.
