The topic of this thesis is production planning in the textile industry. The thesis consists of two parts, both of which use the data of a firm currently operating in the short fibre sector of the textile industry. The first part consists of a dynamic linear programming model for the macro production planning of the firm under consideration. The linear programming model is then used to analyse a number of scenarios with the aim of determining optimal production, purchasing, inventory, and sales policies and directions for future investment. The second part consists of the scheduling of the Finishing departmerit. As this problem is of the classic lin-jobs m-machines" type which has no known analytic solution, a heuristic algorithm, which will not require any changes in the current system, is developed to help generate alternative schedules and obtain an insight into the workings of the department.
